May Day! May Day!

By Allen Lyle

The 2023 Hurricane Season is a month away. Even though we get all kinds of early forecasts, the truth is we just never really know what Mother Nature might throw at us, so we have to be ready for any scenario. However, since we’ve got a month to prepare (and DO start your preparations!), let’s take a quick look at a celebration coming up this Monday: May Day.

You may or may not be aware that May Day is not a holiday unique to the U.S. In fact, it’s a holiday that has been celebrated for centuries by people worldwide. It’s a celebration of Spring along with the anticipation of the very near Summer. Some cultures will set up a Maypole with long streaming ribbons to dance around.

Some have a Spring-to-Summer celebration party. Others give flowers to friends, loved ones, or a stranger.

If you happen to live in Hawaii, instead of May Day, you celebrate Lei Day!

If flowers aren’t your thing, then celebrate some history instead. May Day in 1841, the first wagon train left Independence, MO for the golden coast of California.

May 1, 1883 you could have attended the very first show presented by “Buffalo Bill” Cody.

If you went to the local grocer on May Day of 1941 you could have bought the very first box of Cheerios.

And on May 1, 1952, everyone was introduced to Mr. Potato Head for the very first time.  (Psssst! He was a REAL potato!)

So, while it’s important to begin to prepare for the coming storm season, take time out to celebrate the current season. If you don’t want to erect a Maypole, then just find a really tall person and dance a jig around them. I promise, you’ll feel great.
